About the Project
ASO Systems is undertaking a critical quality assurance project for a major medical knowledge base. We require an expert indexer to conduct a thorough audit of existing indexing work. The goal is to evaluate the quality, accuracy, and adherence to specific stylistic and procedural standards against a set of well-defined benchmarks.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and meticulous Medical Indexing Specialist to perform a comprehensive audit of a large corpus of indexed medical content. The ideal candidate will possess an in-depth understanding of medical terminology, indexing principles, and specific style guides, including the AMA Manual of Style. Familiarity with the indexing standards of the Borden Institute is highly desirable.
You will be responsible for analyzing existing indexes, comparing them against three key standards, and delivering a detailed report with findings and recommendations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct a systematic audit of pre-existing medical indexes across a designated set of documents.
- Evaluate the indexed content against three primary standards:
- General Best Practices: Assess the quality, consistency, cross-referencing, depth, and usability of the indexes based on established professional indexing norms (e.g., American Society of Indexers guidelines).
- AMA Style: Scrutinize the indexes for strict adherence to the conventions outlined in the latest edition of the AMA Manual of Style (e.g., terminology, formatting, abbreviation use).
- Borden Institute Standard: Compare the work to a specific sample provided by ASO Systems, which exemplifies the desired style and depth of the Borden Institute.
- Identify errors, inconsistencies, and areas for improvement.
- Categorize findings by severity and standard.
- Provide clear, constructive, and actionable recommendations for remediation.
- Deliver a comprehensive final audit report summarizing the methodology, findings, and a roadmap for bringing the entire corpus up to the required standards.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience (5+ years) as a professional indexer, specifically within the medical, scientific, or technical publishing fields.
- Certification from the American Society of Indexers (ASI) or equivalent body is a significant advantage.
- Demonstrable, thorough expertise in the AMA Manual of Style.
- Direct experience with or extensive knowledge of the publishing and indexing standards of the Borden Institute or similar U.S. military medical publications (e.g., Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Textbooks of Military Medicine series).
- Exceptional knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
- Superior attention to detail and excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to create clear and professional audit reports.
Preferred Qualifications

- A background in life sciences, medicine, or nursing.
