Our client a rapidly expanding, award-winning family law firm that serves clients in family law, estate planning, probate, and guardianship across Harris and Montgomery Counties, Texas is seeking a seasoned Chief Operating Officer (COO) with a strong background in professional services to partner directly with the owner in managing the firm’s administrative and business operations. The ideal candidates will have prior or current experience as a VP of Operations, COO, or Professional Legal Administrator (PLA) will be given strong consideration. This role involves overseeing the planning, organization, direction, and control of the firm’s daily operations and guiding the implementation of firm-wide systems. Thir role reports directly to the owner.
The COO position covers a broad spectrum of responsibilities, including administration, personnel, finance, facilities, and business systems. We are looking for a candidate with the experience and maturity to work collaboratively with the owner and senior staff on strategy, policy, problem-solving, and decision-making. Our COO will be an exceptional executor and a strategic partner to the owner and the C-Suite team. Qualified candidates will have experience managing an annual budget between $7-9M, leading a team of at least 30, and making independent hiring and termination decisions.
ResponsibilitiesExecute the firm’s business plan and meet quarterly gross revenue and profitability metrics by effectively developing the six parts of the businessCollaborate with the owner to design and implement business strategies, plans, and proceduresEvaluate performance by analyzing and interpreting data and metricsSupervise the work of the non-lawyer support staff and vendorsLead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance feedback, evaluations, and general human resources operations, including payroll and benefitsEnsure that the firm’s business policies and procedures are fully documented in writing, organized, deployed, and auditedOversee financial operations with mastery of financial reporting and accounting principlesEmploy best practices to properly resource and manage a fully remote staffEnsure the digital plant is fully functional, at all times, for the entire teamConduct ongoing risk assessments to ensure the firm properly mitigates exposureManage project successfully by designing strategic tasks and leveraging process owners within set timelinesDemonstrate effective leadership strategies that build a positive professional culture, promote retention of performing team members, and recruit ‘A’ candidates to open positions quickly
Education and ExperienceDegree in management, business management, human resources, or related fieldPrior experience running a professional services firm or a division or department of a mid-sized/large professional services firm with an annual budget no lower than $8M (law firm experience not required but is a plus)SHRM or HRCI certifications are a plusProven track record in managing a team of 30 plus and the autonomy to hire and fire individuals.Ability to design monitor and necessary checks and balances of a budget for the practice.Designing executing, monitoring and achieving business plans will utilizing the Leadership Managment Best Practices.Leading people effectively, including recruiting the right people, developing them into great team members, and retaining them over time. This includes ensuring that all federal and state HR laws are followed, and risks are minimized.
Compensation: Base plus annual profitability bonus.
