The Associate Director, Dental Informatics provides strategic leadership and vision for all technology services supporting clinical, academic, and research operations. This role is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive Dental IT strategy aligned with the schools mission, ensuring the reliability, security, and innovation of digital systems across the dental enterprise. Leads a multi-disciplinary IT team, ensures seamless collaboration and partnership with Marquettes central IT department, oversees governance and prioritization, and drives continuous improvement through best practices, automation, and data analytics. Ensures technology investments deliver measurable value, foster operational excellence, and advance the School of Dentistrys reputation as a leader in dental education, patient care, and research.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Technology support and software development:
Serve as an escalation point for complex technical issues, and contribute to the design, development, and implementation of custom applications and integrations that advance the School of Dentistrys clinical, academic, and research missions. Ensure best practices in software development, documentation, and user support are followed throughout the IT team.
2. Team Leadership and service excellence:
Lead, mentor, and develop a multi-disciplinary IT team, fostering a culture of service excellence and customer focus. Partner with IT Services to ensure that all Dental technology and data services are delivered with commitment to high-quality user experience, responsiveness, and continuous improvement based on stakeholder feedback. Oversee workforce planning, recruitment, and professional development. Responsible for supervision of staff which includes but is not limited to hiring, terming, disciplinary actions, performance management, staff development, etc.
3. Portfolio & Project Management:
Oversee project intake, prioritization, and delivery, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and achievement of KPIs and service level objectives. Serve as a project manager on key initiatives.
4. Strategic Leadership:
Develop and execute a comprehensive Dental IT strategy aligned with the MUSODs clinical, academic, and research missions. Lead the development of multi-year technology roadmaps and ensure alignment with university-wide IT initiatives.
5. Collaborate and Partner with Central IT:
Establish and maintain a strong, collaborative partnership with Marquettes central IT department. Ensure seamless integration and support for university-wide and dental-specific systems, clarify roles and responsibilities, and foster open communication and shared understanding. Serve as the primary liaison for Dental IT, proactively addressing issues, aligning priorities, and driving joint initiatives to support the MUSODs mission.
6. Security & Compliance:
Own the Dental Schools IT security and compliance posture, ensuring audit readiness and effective risk management in partnership with IT Services.
7. Innovation, Analytics and Reporting:
Drive innovation through the adoption of automation, analytics, and emerging technologies to enhance operational efficiency and support data-driven decision-making. Lead and may perform data analysis and reporting activities, ensuring the delivery of accurate, actionable insights to support clinical, academic, and research initiatives within the School of Dentistry.
8. Change Management & Communications:
Lead change management and communication strategies to support technology adoption, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement.
9. Vendor & Budget Management:
Oversee vendor relationships, contract negotiations, and budget planning for Dental IT, ensuring optimal use of resources.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration or related field
A minimum of 5 years of experience in IT, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role
Experience driving innovation through automation, analytics, and emerging technologies. Hands on experience with technology support, custom application development, integration and reporting and analytics
Excellent leadership skills, providing strategic direction, inspiring and developing staff
Proven ability to systematically identify, evaluate and prioritize risks and develop and implement effective strategies to address
Ability to effectively convey information, inspire and guide through change, and promote a culture of adaptability and continuous improvement
Proven ability to build and maintain effective partnerships with central IT, vendors, and cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring seamless integration and shared understanding
Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills. Ability to systematically gather, analyze, and interpret data to make informed decisions, while effectively organizing tasks and resources to achieve objectives efficiently
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Masters degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration or related field
Deep understanding of clinical, academic, and research technology environments, including hands-on experience with technology support, custom application development, and integration of dental-specific systems
Experience working in healthcare, dental, or higher education environment
Strong knowledge of IT security, HIPAA/FERPA compliance, audit readiness, and risk management practices in a healthcare or academic setting
