About The Role
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead operations for our Behavioral Health Unit. This executive role is responsible for driving operational excellence, clinical efficiency, and patient-centered care within the behavioral health service line. The ideal candidate brings deep hospital leadership experience, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to mental health innovation.
Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the behavioral health unit, ensuring alignment with Atrium’s overall strategic goals
- Partner closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer, and behavioral health clinical leadership to implement operational improvements and care delivery models
- Drive performance metrics related to quality, patient safety, access, throughput, and staff engagement
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards including Joint Commission, CMS, and state-specific behavioral health guidelines
- Lead and mentor multidisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and collaboration
- Oversee financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost management strategies
- Implement best practices in patient flow, discharge planning, and continuity of care
- Evaluate and improve behavioral health programming based on patient outcomes, provider feedback, and market trends
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Health Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), or related field required
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in hospital operations
- Proven experience overseeing inpatient behavioral health services, preferably in a large or academic medical center.
- Strong understanding of behavioral health regulations, billing, and care delivery systems
- Demonstrated success in driving operational change, financial stewardship, and quality improvement initiatives
- Experience in turnaround or growth-stage behavioral health programs
- Familiarity with behavioral health tech integration and digital care models
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a passion for advancing mental health care
- Ability to lead within a matrixed environment and influence cross-functional teams
- A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset with the ability to think critically and strategically.

Additional Information
The expected base pay for this role will be between $160,000 to $200,000 annually at the commencement of employment. However, base pay will be determined on an individualized basis and will be impacted by location and years of experience. Further, base pay is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Psychplus Health-sponsored benefits.
