Bioprocess Automation Engineer
The Automation Engineer is accountable for the definition, development, deployment and support of bioprocess equipment on the Berkeley, CA site and at satellite sites as required. The automation Engineer would support multiple facets of the business. This includes rFVIII Operations, mAb Operations, Cell Therapy, Gene Therapy, and mRNA. Contributes as an automation engineer in division/business unit and has project team leadership and financial impact with demonstrated specific expertise. Defines and applies innovative engineering, manufacturing, and HES techniques to assure continuous improvement of processes. Continuously participates in technical and non-technical training. Participates in external conferences/technical gatherings. Technical system owner for automation packages of installed process equipment platform and technology in the Biotech network (Commercial and Clinical). Responsible for troubleshooting installed process equipment platform and for providing solutions on a global level. Accountable for the automation package that supports the SUT mAb equipment platform (meeting BT products manufacturing requirements). Accountable to lead and/or own auxillary automation topics related to the platform (digital plant enablement). Leads projects of larger scope (or portions of projects) and is often called upon by peers for guidance.
Your Tasks And Responsibilities
- The primary responsibilities of this role, Bioprocess Automation Engineer, are to: Defines, deploys, starts-up and supports bioprocess equipment, as a bioprocess automation engineer, across the biotech network, this consists of Cell Therapy, Gene Therapy, Protein Therapeutics and Vaccines;
- Directly accountable for performance of bioprocess equipment within one's scope of work.
- Makes independent decisions within defined areas of responsibility;
- Supports life-cycle management for a given portion of the overall equipment platform function from a Global level. (i.e. system change implementation and troubleshooting);
- Responsible for system designs and design documentation packages;
- Leads cross functional teams to deliver solutions that may require expertise from other areas of the business (i.e. Production and Quality);
- Follow Bayer process control technology practices, standards, guidelines, and procedures for preparation of estimates, scopes, specifications, design, and other deliverables;
- Evaluate all automation aspects of engineering to ensure all project objectives including safety, technical correctness, budget, constructability, schedule, maintainability, and operability are met;
- Develop hardware, software, functional and user specifications for process control systems and associated components;
- Executes assignments of high complexity, develops solutions for complex problems independently;
- Executes project engineering assignments with high complexity and engages in user discussions to define and implement user requirements;
- Independently seeks opportunities to advance existing skill sets (soft skills and technical);
- Continuously participates in technical and non-technical training to expand existing skill set;
- Individual self develops in all aspects of ATMPs.
Who You Are
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree: (Chemical) Engineering or equivalent;
- Experience within Biopharma industry;
- Professional registration and/or certifications as appropriate;
- Experience in a GMP environment;

Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and 6+ years of relevant experience within Biopharma industry or Master’s Degree and 2+ years of relevant experience within Biopharma industry or PhD 0-2+ years of relevant experience within Biopharma industry;
- Experience in capital project executions.
Employees can expect to be paid a salary of between $ 99,000 – $148,000 Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
