About Our Internships
Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students with experience and exposure to the healthcare industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real work projects, build meaningful relationships and connections within the organization, and experience our mission and enterprise goals through our program curriculum centered on our leadership model (Personal, People, Thought, and Results Leadership). Our Summer 2025 Internship is June 9th or June 16th through August 15th, 2025.

- November - January: 2nd round interviews & offers extended
As an intern at Blue Shield of California, you will:
- Participate in impactful projects during a 10-week internship program
- Undertake a 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the healthcare industry, and more
- Be invited to participate in BSC employee events and networking opportunities such as Employee Resource Groups, employee volunteer activities, and more
General Requirements:
- Must reside in the state of California for the duration of the internship
- Hybrid requirements - Preferably live within a 50-mile radius of a BSC office and be available for in-office collaboration 2 times per month
- Must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of the internship, with a graduation date of December 2025 or later
Your Role
The Health Transformation organization is committed to identifying, designing, implementing, evaluating, and launching innovations that transform health. Key to the goal of transforming health is creatively and effectively leveraging data to drive improvement in the delivery of care for our members and to optimize internal operations.
The Health Data Strategy Intern may:
- Support the development of new strategies to acquire clinical data
- Validate and ensure the accuracy and integrity of data received from multiple sources
- Collaborate with Data and Analytics to drive planning and execution to ingest new data types from multiple sources into the Digital Health Record
- Collaborate with cross-organizational stakeholders to support Digital Health data adoption for defined priority use cases
- Support with executive updates, strategy planning, SharePoint restructuring and organization
Responsibilities
Your Work
In this role, you may:
- Support design and development of an integrated, longitudinal patient record, also known as Digital Health Record
- Support strategic planning around health data analytics including identification of appropriate data sources, integration, and quality assessment
- Lead design and analysis sessions with various stakeholders with deeper understanding of various data sources to meet health data strategy goals including but not limited to creation of Digital Health Record
- Apply and adopt Agile (SAFe) methodologies to all programs and projects in close partnership with IT for integrating data from disparate systems while managing interdependencies of other business units
- Take hands-on role on issues related to data interoperability, data capabilities and data readiness
- Translate technical language to strategic business-ready messaging to communicate impact to colleagues and senior leadership
- Serve as a partner to the Health Transformation Data & Evaluation team and Health Data Strategy teams
Qualifications
Your Knowledge and Experience
- Actively pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in public health, business, health care or related field
- Minimum 1 year of related professional experience, project, or coursework
- Strong communication skills required, particularly writing for publication
- Proactive, solution focused mindset with demonstrated creative, problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the key synergies necessary among practices, payers, community, populations, and policy leaders to better align health care transformation efforts
- Passionate about changing healthcare and challenging the status quo to advance health equity
Pay Range:
The pay range for this role is: $25.00 to $30.00 for California.

Please note that this range represents the pay range for this and many other positions at Blue Shield that fall into this pay grade. Blue Shield salaries are based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, location (California, Bay area, or outside California), and current employee salaries for similar roles.

- Hybrid – In a business unit approved office a few times per year to 3 days per week, on average

If the role you’re applying for is deemed an “Essential Role,” the company has determined that the role can only be performed in a Blue Shield office or in the field and would require your to meet the office worker classification.
Physical Requirements:
Office Environment - roles involving part to full time schedule in Office Environment. Due to the current public health emergency in California, Blue Shield employees are almost all working remotely. Based in our physical offices and work from home office/deskwork - Activity level: Sedentary, frequency most of work day.
