Akido is rebuilding the healthcare experience from the ground up. Through early interventions designed around social determinants of health (SDoH), world-class care focused on chronic disease, and human-centered technology, we believe we can build a healthcare model that allows for all patients to live their fullest lives. We are a fast-growing, impact-focused, Y Combinator company created out of the University of Southern California's D-Health Lab with the idea that empowering government, healthcare, and nonprofit services with population-based data could help usher in a new era of preventive public health. Today we are building a full stack medical network that leverages our predictive capabilities to provide a frictionless experience for both our patients and care providers.
About Akido
Akido is a care delivery organization focused on providing personalized, holistic care to all, including vulnerable communities. By leveraging data and artificial intelligence, Akido is transforming the healthcare experience for its network of physicians, care providers, and nearly half a million patients across the nation.
Healthcare for the Gig Economy Workforce
Akido is launching an innovative healthcare initiative tailored for the underserved gig economy workforce, who face barriers to traditional healthcare. The initiative will focus on meeting patients where they are and delivering 'whole person care' services to address physical, behavioral, and social drivers of health.
In collaboration with the Independent Drivers Guild (IDG) and Workers Benefit Fund (WBF), we are launching an inaugural program this year in New York City, specifically for independent drivers, such as those affiliated with Uber and Lyft.
About the Role
We're looking for a
Health Coach who is passionate about advancing health equity and excited by the opportunity to build a new kind of care model from the ground up. You'll not only support patients directly—you'll help design and evolve how we deliver care.
This is not a typical coaching role. You will be a key contributor to a collaborative, multidisciplinary care team, delivering mobile and virtual care to communities who've long been left out of traditional healthcare systems. You'll bring your voice and lived experience into workflow design, patient engagement strategies, and program materials. Your insights will directly shape how we build a model of care that is human-centered, scalable, and grounded in trust.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, team-oriented environment and is energized by co-creating solutions that make care more accessible and compassionate.
What You'll Do
Patient Engagement & Coaching
- Build trusting, sustained relationships with patients through in-person and virtual interactions
- Coach patients on setting and achieving personal health goals—such as managing stress, improving diet, increasing activity, or following care plans
- Use motivational interviewing and trauma-informed techniques to support sustainable behavior change
- Help patients overcome barriers to care and navigate social services in partnership with social workers and care navigators
- Offer culturally relevant, accessible education on lifestyle, prevention, and chronic condition management
Program Building & Innovation
- Help co-create the care delivery model, patient journey, and coaching framework alongside your team
- Pilot new approaches to outreach, coaching, and education—and give real-time feedback to improve workflows
- Participate in developing patient-facing materials, community outreach strategies, and new engagement tools
- Surface insights from the field to ensure the care model remains responsive, inclusive, and impactful
Whole-Person Care & Team-Based Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with providers, registered dietitians, social workers, and health navigators to ensure care is coordinated and person-centered
- Participate in regular huddles, case reviews, and learning sessions focused on improving patient outcomes and team functioning
- Assist in refining coaching workflows and documentation practices within the EHR
- Offer perspective on how to better reach, serve, and empower gig workers, based on your day-to-day experience
Outreach & Community Engagement
- Travel across NYC's five boroughs as part of our mobile care team to meet patients in the communities where they live and work
- Support community-based events and activations designed to engage, educate, and enroll new patients
- Serve as a trusted, visible representative of Akido's mission in the field
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in public health, health education, nutrition, psychology, social work, or a related field — OR equivalent experience in health coaching, peer support, or community health work
- Completion of a health coach training or certification program (e.g., NBC-HWC, IIN, Duke, etc.) preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport across cultures, languages, and lived experiences
- Experience working with underserved or marginalized populations
- Proficiency in motivational interviewing or other coaching modalities
- Familiarity with EHR platforms, digital health tools, and remote care delivery
- Fluent in conversational and medical Spanish
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience in health coaching, patient navigation, or similar direct service roles
- Background in chronic disease prevention or management, behavioral health, or nutrition
- Experience in a start-up or community health setting
- Deep familiarity with New York City neighborhoods and community resources
- Lived experience that reflects the communities we serve
Work Environment
This is a mobile and field-based role with frequent travel throughout all five boroughs of NYC. You'll work in a variety of settings including mobile clinics, community organizations, and virtual platforms. Flexibility is key, as the role may involve nontraditional hours including early mornings, evenings, or weekends to best serve our patient population.
