Our facility is a custom-built, 40,000-square-foot hospital, with another 4,500-square-foot addition planned for 2025. We have access to state-of-the-art medical equipment necessary for the highest quality patient care, such as: digital x-ray, 64-slice CT, 1.5 Tesla MRI, multi-parameter telemetry, 4 high-quality ultrasound units, fluoroscopy and endoscopy suites, multiple surgical suites, in-house diagnostic laboratory, in-house pharmacy, underwater treadmill, and blood bank.
Upstate Veterinary Specialties continues to expand to meet the growing needs of our community, with active recruiting efforts for additional specialty services (Dentistry/oral surgery, ophthalmology, and radiology) as well as ancillary support services (on-site crematory and regional reference laboratory with clinical pathology).

Upstate Veterinary Specialties, PLLC is a growing, 24/7 privately-owned specialty and emergency practice located in upstate New York. As a privately owned hospital, the practice owners are active clinicians who take a team approach to manage the hospital. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will provide leadership and the strategic vision of the hospital in collaboration with owners and fellow officers. Specific responsibilities include: Leading and managing our board-certified specialists, emergency clinicians, chiefs of service, and medical staff director to achieve the hospital’s business objectives and strategic plan; overseeing the hospital’s medical training programs; developing and implementing new medical initiatives, technologies, and medical policies; conducting medical reviews for all adverse events; and serving as the doctor liaison on the Patient Safety and Training committees.
Position Requirements:
Education and Experience Requirements:
- DVM, VMD, or equivalent international degree from an accredited teaching hospital. Veterinarians with advanced training (Internship, residency) or specialty certification preferred.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a practicing veterinarian in a 24-hour Specialty and Emergency Referral Hospital.
- Minimum of five (5) years in a position involving the management of others (Medical Director, Chief of Service, etc.).
- Demonstrated leadership experience is required.
- Must have a demonstrated understanding of veterinary laws and regulations.

Position Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:

- Oversee the Chiefs of Service (COSs).
- Conduct thorough medical reviews for all medical errors, complaints, and adverse events.
- Oversee UVS medical training programs.
- Develop a strategic plan for new medical specialties in line with the Hospital’s Mission and Vision.
- Oversee the development and implementation of new medical initiatives or technologies within the hospital.
- Oversee the development and implementation of new medical policies and practices within the hospital.
- In conjunction with Human Resources and Finance, review and/or develop compensation strategy and structure for veterinarians and all medical staff.
- Provide final screen of new medications/medical products before rollout to the medical staff.
- Serve as a doctor liaison for the Patient Safety Committee and Training Committee.
- Represent UVS at Veterinary Specialty Practice Alliance conferences providing a CMO perspective as appropriate.
- Participate in VSPA committee(s) as needed.
- Oversee infection control measures within the hospital.
- Stay updated on medical safety and regulatory standards.
- Act as a champion and lead change to identify and promote best practices.
- Further Development and Education.
- Attend webinars or seminars to further develop planning, organization, management, and interpersonal skills.
- Continuing education to maintain licensure as a veterinarian in New York and specialty certification, if applicable.
- Shadow in UVS services and departments to gain a broader perspective of the hospital as needed.
