The Chief Medical & Transformation Officer (CMTO) will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team and will work closely with the other members of the executive team to guide and oversee the organization’s strategic plan, immediate and future goals, and operational objectives. Additionally, the CMTO will serve as a non-voting, ex-officio member of the MaineHealth Board of Directors.

The CMTO’s ultimate objective will be to lead and inspire the clinical leadership team to develop programs, processes, and initiatives to provide compassionate, comprehensive, high-quality, evidenced-based care, and service excellence. This leader will assure the highest standards of healthcare delivery and outcomes, ensuring a constant patient focus.

The CMTO will serve as a guiding force behind culture and identity and will also foster a sense of team that promotes exceptional service, creative problem solving, and collaboration. This executive will drive greater performance and leverage systems thinking and creativity to continuously improve clinical design, structure and quality. By maintaining a visible presence within MaineHealth, including regular rounding, the CMTO will work to build, develop, and manage a clinical leadership team that can execute on operational strategies, and maintain and nurture a highly competent, motivated, and productive staff.

Specifically, this individual will collaborate with the MaineHealth Chief Nursing Officer and MaineHealth Medical Group President to advance system strategies, clinical practice and patient-centered care initiatives. The CMTO will foster clinical integration and transformation across the continuum of patient care services provided by the health system, including the identification, creation and oversight of new structures of care, partnerships and collaborations that continue to position MaineHealth as a nimble, contemporary health system in a rapidly changing landscape.

Direct Reports to the Chief Medical & Transformation Officer include the Chief Academics and Research Officer, the Chief Quality and Safety Officer, the Regional Chief Medical Officers, the Vice President of Pharmacy, the Clinical System Service Line Leaders, and the Senior Medical Director of Clinical Innovations. In addition, the MaineHealth Medical Group Chief Medical Officer will be a matrix direct report of the CMTO.

Continuously drives improvements in performance with regards to clinical quality by leveraging education, research, collaboration, systems thinking and creativity.

Creates and fosters an environment of entrepreneurialism and ownership among physicians at MaineHealth.

Education, Research & Learning

Prioritizes and is dedicated to developing learning initiatives within MaineHealth.
Serves as the lead executive in sponsoring the health system’s journey to become a learning organization with a growth mindset.
Supports Academics at MaineHealth to meet the present and future needs of the communities it serves. Ensures that educational offerings are evolving to meet the needs of all constituents while also supporting efforts in both urban and rural environments.
Grows clinical research and innovation at MaineHealth in order to enhance patient care and promote a culture of scientific curiosity within the organization.

Service Line Leadership

Co-lead (with the COO) MaineHealth’s Systems Service Lines, representing Heart and Vascular, Surgery, Child Health, and Oncology as well as future service lines representing Orthopedics and Neurosurgery.
Lead the Acute Care Physician Enterprise. Oversee the acute care medical staff functions and lead the organizational chief medical officers as an effective and accountable team.

Pharmacy

Plays an active role in transforming the pharmacy into a venue of care comparable to acute care hospitals, ambulatory facilities, and physician practices.

Safe Care At Home

Fosters the development of a Safe at Home care continuum, which includes remote patient monitoring, digital encounters, low acuity home touches, home health nursing, home infusion and hospital at home in conjunction with nursing and medical group leadership.

Digital Care Development

In conjunction with the President of the MaineHealth Medical Group and MaineHealth Chief Information Officer, lead efforts to develop digital care platforms across the continuum of care.

Physician Culture & Leadership Development

Builds, develops, and manages a clinical leadership team that is able to execute on operational strategies, and maintain and nurture a highly competent, motivated, and productive staff.
Works and is dedicated to building effective, trusting, and interdisciplinary teams at all levels of the organization.
Establishes a culture, identity, and sense of team that fosters exceptional service, creative problem solving, and collaboration.
Works to create cultural mechanisms that intentionally engage physicians and advanced practice providers in decision making throughout the organization.
Partners with the President of the MaineHealth Medical Group and the MaineHealth Chief People Officer to create leadership development curricula for physicians and advanced practice providers.
Leads, represents, and appropriately advocates for the non-employed members of the medical staff across MaineHealth.

Administrative Responsibilities & Organizational Leadership

The Candidate

Experience And Essential Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of general principles of healthcare management and leadership.
Clinical and leadership stature that establishes immediate respect, credibility, and effective relationships with clinical chairs and a pluralistic medical staff.
Ability to identify areas for improvement, and then formulate and implement strategies.
Strong background that includes support of and or involvement in research and education as well as working in an environment with employed, private practice and fulltime academic physicians
Values visibility and is engaged at all levels of a complex delivery system appreciating the varying cultures among system entities.
Known for listening and encouraging the open expression of ideas and opinions and consistently emphasizing integrity and concern for all people.
Knowledge of processes to address organizational planning, performance, change and improvement.

Education And Training

Qualified candidates will have achieved a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy Additional degrees, including MHA, MPH, MBA, are desirable but not necessary.
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively professional leadership experience is required.
